The phases of CALL
The most important thing in the Computer Assisted Language Learning is to know its history. Here is a summary of the three phases of CALL development.
§1. Behaviorist:
The audio-lingual
method is widely used. It provides students with drills and practice. The
computer is used as a tutor, presenting drill exercises without feed-back
components.
§2. The
Communicative approach:
It focuses more on using forms than on the forms. It provides skill practice in
a non-drill format like language games. The computer is still a tutor, but it
gives students choices, control, and interaction.
§3. The
integrative CALL approach: It
is based on multimedia computers and the internet that combine text, graphics,
sound, animation and video. It still under development.

A Lovely Research for me :)
Last year with Doctor Zaid, I made a study about the Turkish Terms in Assir Region. I like that topic and I was interesting while doing it. The following is the abstract:
In
this paper, I want to prove that Turkish terms have been acquired in Asser
region. For political and religious reasons, the Ottoman Caliphate has occupied
many areas in the world, Saudi Arabia is
among them and it has some linguistic impacts on persons' speech especially in
Asser region. Some information was collected about the history of the Ottoman
Caliphate in Asser, and a questionnaire is made to investigate peoples' views
about this acquisition and to get from them some Turkish terms which have been
acquired and used. The Turkish conquest has affected the dialect of Asser
region. New Turkish terms used by people in Asser has showed in this paper.
I shall share you the whole study next time.
The advantages and disadvantages of CALL
A Review of "The
Advantages and Disadvantages of Computer Assisted Language Learning and
Teaching for Foreign Languages"
The rapid development of
computers has made foreign language teachers consider computer assisted
language teaching a part of language learning pedagogy. So, the educational
system has to take into account the technological changes. This paper is about
the advantages and disadvantages of computer assisted language learning (CALL).
This paper first describes the
different stages of development of CALL. Then, it presents the advantages and
disadvantages of computer usage in both foreign language teaching and learning.
The main aim of this paper is to make language teachers recognize both the
advantages and disadvantages of CALL.
There are some other advantages
and disadvantages can be updated during the current CALL phase. In one hand, a
computer can promote language interaction between teacher and learners. It
offers the possibility to simulate some processes through animation, and thus
some experimental demos. It makes the educational process modern and efficient.
Getting used to computer technology from an early age influences students
intellectual development. Indeed, it offers the possibility of realising a
string of didactic operations, which are
important for developing students' creativity. On the other hand, CALL may
deteriorate the teacher role in the learning process. It favors those students
with analytic thinking, but not those with synthetic thinking. Controlling
students' mental activity by the teacher stops them from developing creative
abilities. Also, individualization of learning can lead to denial of the
teacher and to the isolation of the learning process from its psycho-social
context.
Undoubtedly, there are a number
of positive and negative aspects of CALL. The role of the teacher in the
classroom is very important, even though computers have become part of the
learning process. So, such developing technology should only be seen as
integrated into the learning and teaching process.

The Symposuim of Present and Future of English in Saudi Arabia which was presented at KKU was wonderful. The papers which were presented were interesting. The study of Haya Al Subai was interesting. It was related to computer assisted language learning. She presented the impact of tweeter on gaining vocabulary. There were other doctors who presented beneficial papers. It was really a great Symposuim.
